Lichen Cluster

GGlacier National Park, Montana

Lichen grows on the side of a boulder on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountain Range. Lichen is a fungus, but feeds itself by gathering the sun’s energy by way of photosynthesis. Without needing a root system for gathering nutrients, lichen is often the sole vegetation in harsh environments where little else grows.
