Mississippi Beginning

Itasca State Park, Minnesota

One of the longest rivers in the world, the Mississippi, flows as a narrow outflow from its nearby headwaters in northern Minnesota.  Before reaching Minneapolis, the river will lose over half of its elevation on its 3-month, 2,300-mile-long journey to the Gulf of Mexico.
