Badlands Deer

Badlands National Park, South Dakota

A mule deer pauses while eating, attentive to whatever broke the silence of the calm early morning in Badlands National Park. The deer listens for a moment, and then returns to eating. These deer are selective about what they eat due to their unspecialized stomachs which can only tolerate fresh grasses, soft twigs, fruit and lichens.
