Ancient Dunes Cataract Canyon, Utah The coastal dunes of an ancient sea are petrified as sandstone. This formation lies just above the canyon that drops down to the Dirty Devil River, a camping location for John Wesley Powell and his 1869 expedition. When one on Powell’s crew asked about fishing in this muddy river, another quipped that the river is a “dirty devil” and that it should be named as such. |
