Pond Lilies

Caribou-Targhee National Forest, Idaho

A grouping of hundreds of Rocky Mountain Pond Lilies covers the surface of a lake in northeastern Idaho. Well-adapted to growing aquatically, water lilies spread their water-resistant leaves broadly across the water’s surface to maximize their absorbtion of sunshine. Native Americans made flour and popcorn from their seeds.
