Past Eruption

Mount Saint Helens, Washington

A dead tree serves as a reminder of the eruptive forces of Mt. Saint Helens, which is seen emitting a plume of steam in the distance.  In 1980, the volcano erupted, causing a pyroclastic flow to eliminate 250 square miles of forest and raise the water level of nearby Spirit Lake by 250 feet.   Ash fell as far away as Minnesota and Oklahoma.
