Ahead of Its Time Zion National Park, Utah A dead Pinyon pine still clings to a cliff edge on an eroded sandstone mountain. The sandstone is highly porous, retaining moisture for years from what little rain falls in the area. The Pinyon pine grows by anchoring its roots into the sandstone’s crevices in pursuit of any available moisture that has been absorbed by the rock. |
