Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota

A prairie dog rests atop one of many entrances to his home. Prairie dogs live in large colonies, called towns, which contain elaborate tunnel systems that can span hundreds of acres. Prairie dogs use the excavated dirt mounds that are piled around each tunnel’s entrance as observation posts.
