Ponderosa Bark

Stanislaus National Forest, California

The thick bark of a Ponderosa Pine plays host to clumps of wolf lichen. The bark, which is largely fire resistant, transforms as the trees age. A young Ponderosa’s bark is a flaky dark gray, but that changes to layers of red-orange bark as the tree matures. Some ponderosa pines have lived beyond 1,000 years.
