The Dive

Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

A Clark’s Nutcracker dives toward the ground with the brilliant blue water of Crater Lake in the background. The bird collects pine seeds, which it stores in literally hundreds of locations throughout a huge area of over 100 square miles. The bird has excellent long-term spatial memory, able to relocate seed caches even months later under a covering of snow.
