Yosemite Sands

Yosemite National Park, California

The footprint of a raccoon is indented into the sandy shore of the placid Merced River. Past Ice Age forces carved mountains into sand to form the soil that dominates the floor of what is now Yosemite Valley. Over much less time, the Merced River’s current has created interesting patterns of sand ripples.
