On the Prairie

Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota

The open terrain and typically dry conditions of the American prairie support few trees, like this lone survivor in the North Dakota grasslands. Prairie grasses grow from deep, inter-connected roots that reach water efficiently and prevent soil erosion when rains do arrive to this arid environment.
