Out on a Limb

Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

A Uinta Chipmunk reverses itself near the end of a limb of a Douglas fir tree on the steep slopes of Bryce Canyon. This species avoids predators by living in trees, where it goes into a prolonged sleep in winter, but awakes occasionally to eat food that it had cached throughout the fall.
